Being selected to participate in EBW Project was the best Christmas gift I’ve ever had.
EBW gave me the opportunity to have an amazing experience during my last graduation semester. I’ve met great people in São Paulo: other exchange students from all over the world, my Brazilian classmates and my teachers at USP.
I just loved USP. They have very good teachers and the campus offers a lot of free/cheap facilities – as to practice a lot of open space sports!
Although I’m a Portuguese speaker, being in São Paulo with all the other exchange students allowed me to improve my English competencies and even begin to learn Spanish.
This exchange also helped me to decide some issues about my future. I decided that I want to know other new places and people. To do so, I’ve finish my graduation and I’m starting a Master in International Economics. At the same time I’m doing an internship at a Portuguese company that is building its global presence (actually I think that being in São Paulo was a major advantage during recruitment).
I really advise everyone to take this chance of studying abroad! It will change your way of being, thinking and feeling things.
To Europeans: São Paulo will surprise you! Enjoy everything that USP can offer you! Visit all the touristic places and buildings… and take a trip to other Brazilian states.

Ser selecionada para participar no Projeto EBW foi o melhor presente de Natal que alguma vez tive.
O EBW deu-me a possibilidade de ter uma experiência maravilhosa durante o meu último semestre de graduação. Conheci gente encantadora em São Paulo: outros estudantes de intercâmbio de todo o mundo, os meus colegas brasileiros e os meus professores na USP.
Eu simplesmente adorei a USP. Eles têm ótimos professores e o campus oferece muitas e económicas possibilidades como a de praticar vários desportos ao ar livre!
Apesar de ser nativa de Português, estar em São Paulo com outros estudantes de intercâmbio permitiu-me aperfeiçoar os meus conhecimentos de Inglês e até iniciar Espanhol.
Este intercâmbio também me ajudou a tomar algumas decisões quanto ao meu futuro. Decidi que quero continuar a conhecer novos lugares e novas pessoas. Para tal, já terminei a minha graduação e estou a iniciar o Mestrado em Economia Internacional. Simultaneamente, estou a realizar um estágio numa empresa portuguesa que está a apostar na sua internacionalização (na verdade, acredito que ter estado em São Paulo foi um fator muito vantajoso no momento do recrutamento).
Sem sombra de dúvidas que aconselho a que todos tenham a oportunidade de estudar no estrangeiro! Isso irá mudar a sua forma de ser, de pensar e de percecionar as coisas.
Para os estudantes europeus: São Paulo irá surpreender-vos. Tirem partido de tudo o que São Paulo vos pode oferecer! Visitem todos os lugares turísticos e edifícios… e façam uma viagem a outros estados brasileiros.

My name is Mónica Oliveira, I am a student of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and I have been a mobility student within the framework of the EBW project at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
When I was asked to write about this experience, I didn’t even know where to start!
Describing such an experience is always difficult, due to the complexity and intensity of the things you live… the best way is really living it! And it is with a sense of longing that I speak about my experience in Brazil.
As soon as I got to know this programme, I decided to submit my application. I have always wanted to undertake a mobility experience and this was a unique opportunity, that I couldn’t let go. I was astonishing with the notification of selection… it was a mix of joy and sadness, because I knew I was going to be one semester far from home, family and friends. But this opportunity was just unlosable… Rio de Janeiro was waiting for me, with all its charm and splendor!
At the beginning, it was complicated, I was in a new city, with a new culture; and although there is no linguistic barrier, Brazil is very different from our country. The main difficulty was to get accommodation, but soon it was overcome. The truth is that, with positive attitude and strong will of living that experience to the fullest, everything is solved!
In personal terms, the experience was deeply constructive. The contact with other cultures and mobility students from all over the world has contributed to enrichment both at a personal and cultural level.
The parties, the travels organized with the exchange students, the meetings… I miss all of that! At academic level, the surprise has been extremely positive as well. The teaching and learning methods are very different, and have therefore allowed me to develop new learning abilities, which are more dynamic and interactive, with a high level of requirement. This has been very positive!
I loved this experience, especially because of the city. Rio de Janeiro is indeed a cidade maravilhosa (wonderful city). People are friendly, extremely caring, the riches of the natural world are unimaginable… Undoubtedly it is a city that is worth to know. I have left a little bit of myself in Rio and also a reason to come back, always as possible, to find myself again and leave another piece of myself there. Only when I got in the plane to go to Rio I realized how long I would stay far from home and that view led me to tears. I use to say that I went to and came from Rio crying: in the going travel crying for missing family and friends; in the returning travel crying for the end of this unforgettable experience, for the friends I have made, for the memories of the moments lived.
They often ask me whether I would repeat this experience. My answer is only one: YES! Yes, because I loved the country. Yes, because the city is wonderful. Yes, because I loved the Brazilian people with their particular way of acting. Yes, because it is a unique opportunity. Yes, because I loved the people I met during this experience, and whom I definitely wish to meet again. Yes, because it is really worth! I can only give you one piece of advice: always risk it. Because if you give your best, everything will be fine ;)

O meu nome é Mónica Oliveira, sou aluna de Sociologia da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto e fui aluna de mobilidade no âmbito do projeto EBW na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
Quando nos pediram para escrever sobre esta experiência nem sabia por onde começar!! Descrever uma experiência como esta é sempre algo complicado devido à complexidade e intensidade das coisas que se vive... A melhor maneira é mesmo vivê-la! E é com saudade que aqui vos falo da minha experiência por terras brasileiras.
Mal soube da existência do programa decidi logo inscrever-me. Sempre quis fazer uma experiência de mobilidade e esta era uma oportunidade única que eu não podia perder. Fiquei radiante com a notícia de que era uma das selecionadas... Foi um misto de alegria e tristeza, pois sabia que ia ficar um semestre longe de casa, da família e dos amigos. Mas esta oportunidade era imperdível... O Rio de Janeiro esperava-me, com todo o seu encanto e esplendor!
Ao início foi complicado, estava numa cidade nova, uma nova cultura e, apesar de não haver a barreira linguística, o Brasil é muito diferente do nosso país. A principal dificuldade que encontrei foi na procura de casa, mas depressa se solucionou. A verdade é que com espirito positivo e uma vontade enorme de viver aquela experiência ao máximo tudo se resolve!
Em termos pessoais a experiência foi muito enriquecedora. O contacto com outras culturas, estudantes de mobilidade de todo o mundo contribuiu para um enriquecimento a nível pessoal e cultural muito grande. As festas, as viagens organizadas com os intercambistas, os encontros... tudo isso deixa uma grande saudade! A nível académico a surpresa também foi muito positiva. Os métodos de ensino e aprendizagem são muito diferentes de cá, por isso possibilitaram-me desenvolver novas capacidades de aprendizagem, muito mais dinâmicas e interativas, com um nível de exigência grande, que resultaram muito bem!
Adorei principalmente esta experiência sobretudo pela cidade. O Rio de Janeiro é mesmo uma “Cidade Maravilhosa”. As pessoas são afáveis, muito atenciosas, as riquezas naturais são inimagináveis... É uma cidade sem dúvida a conhecer. No Rio deixei um pouco de mim e um motivo para lá voltar, sempre que possível, para encontrar-me uma vez mais e deixar mais um pouco de mim. Foi só quando entrei no avião para o Rio que tive a noção que ia ficar tanto tempo longe de casa, e essa tomada de consciência levou-me imediatamente às lagrimas. Costumo dizer que fui e voltei do Rio a chorar: na viagem de ida a chorar de saudades da família e dos amigos, na viagem de regresso a chorar pelo término desta experiência inesquecível, dos amigos que fiz e das recordações dos excelentes momentos vividos.
Muitas vezes perguntam-me se voltava a repetir a experiência. A minha resposta é só uma: SIM! Sim, porque adorei o país. Sim, porque a cidade é maravilhosa. Sim, porque adorei a faculdade. Sim, porque adorei as pessoas, com o seu “jeitinho brasileiro”. Sim, porque é uma oportunidade única. Sim, porque adorei as pessoas com quem me cruzei durante esta experiencia, e que algumas pretendo reencontrar, sem dúvida. Sim, porque vale mesmo a pena!
Só tenho um conselho para vos dar: arrisquem sempre tudo. Porque se derem o vosso melhor tudo correrá bem ;)

Being able to experience 6 months (and in my case, now almost one year) in a country that is cultural, social and economically different from my own, far from family, friends and everything that has always been important in my life is a permanent challenge to those who decide to wander through the world.
By luck of fate, since I arrived in Porto I was always very well received by the team at the University of Porto and by the Faculty of Psychology and Education Science. In this integration process, I met several people, made lots of friends; I understood by my own the meaning of “cultural differences”, I lived (in the broadest sense of the word) the city of Porto, I was charmed with the history of the Portuguese people and fell in love with their epic fates.
During this time at Porto and at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Science, I was able to broaden my vision of the world about many aspects. This reflection and critic thought: in my view these are the major advantages that an exchange period can bring to a university student. Being able to see your reality and your world through different eyes and, through this look, being able to change them.

Poder vivenciar seis meses (e agora, no meu caso, quase um ano) em um país cultural, sócio e economicamente diferente do meu, longe da família, amigos e de tudo que sempre fez algum significado na minha vida é um desafio constante a quem decide lançar-se pelo mundo.
Por muita sorte do destino, desde que cheguei ao Porto sempre fui muito bem acolhida por toda a equipe da Universidade do Porto (principalmente a Luisa Capitão, Ana Reis e equipa) e pela Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação. Neste laço de integração, conheci muitas pessoas, fiz diversos amigos, compreendi “na pele” as chamadas ‘diferenças culturais’, vivi (no sentido mais amplo da palavra) a cidade do Porto, encantei-me com a história do povo português e apaixonei-me pelos seus fados epopeicos.
Este tempo em que estive no Porto e em contacto com a Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação, pude de facto ampliar minha visão do mundo acerca de muitos pontos. Esta reflexão e tomada crítica: creio que sejam o maior acréscimo que este período de mobilidade pode trazer para um estudante universitário. O de conseguir olhar a realidade e seu mundo com outros olhos, e fazer deste novo olhar uma possibilidade de mudança e transformação.

The Erasmus Mundus programme has been the most rewarding experience I have lived until this moment, since it has opened my eyes to other cultures, to other people, to worlds that I did not know and that looked so distant.
